A Glossary of Taiwanese Goddess

Type: Booklet Design
Year: 2024

A Glossary of Haunting by Eve Tuck and C. Ree inspired me with a new critical and poetic approach to writing. They use fragmented stories and thoughts to mold a theme. While the paragraphs may not connect directly, they form a comprehensive reflection, leaving space for readers to imagine. Inspired by this, I created A Glossary of Taiwanese Goddess. In Taiwan's folklore, many deities were once mortals who became gods, and although they exist in different dimensions, they often faced challenges similar to ours. This is why I created the glossary—a collection of stories about goddesses, Taiwanese beliefs, religious practices, and imaginative ideas about the unknown.

The glossary is designed as an architectural space, where each paragraph is like a different door or wall, constructing an area for readers to explore and interpret. I imagined the glossary as a Taiwanese temple, including two double-page spreads resembling traditional door gods. When you read through the paragraphs, it feels like walking through doors. Moreover, fire is a key element in Taiwanese culture for communicating with deities. To reflect this, I used yellow and red paper with a shining golden square on the cover, making the work resembles traditional spirit money offerings.
